Dear Noel,
I’m managing our club team and am keen to get any edge I can. What do you recommend for half-time food intake, Noel?
I’m not long back from London.

Noel replies – Treat Them Mean, Keep Them Keen remains the guiding principle after all these years.
I get Nancy to slice up four oranges into eight even halves. I leave them on the table in the dressingroom and let them at it.
May the best men win. A player who does whatever is needed to come out of there with a piece of orange is just the kind of fellow you want in the white heat of a championship match.
I often saw brothers come to blows over a piece of orange. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I bet the Cannings would go straight through you for a slice. It’s a man’s game, and any time you get a chance to promote manliness and toughness, you should take it.
I apply the same principle to the pre-match puck-around. One ball only. Make them work for it. If there’s a bit of skelping, all the better.
