Dear Noel, I’m very down. My father was known as a corner-forward “who’d do nothing for 55 minutes – and then stick two goals to win the match.” The other day, my manager told me that I was a very similar type of player. “Larry,” he said, “you do nothing for 55 minutes too, and even less for the last five.” What can I do Noel. He has destroyed my self-belief. It’s not accurate either. I haven’t lasted past half-time in a game for three years. Noel, this is ruining my life. - Liam (29), East Kerry

Concentrate all your efforts, and your undoubted quality, into one five-minute burst. Imagine the damage you could do if sprung in this way. If the manager doesn’t agree to this, bring it up at your next club meeting. I am sure the club would be aghast at his clear failure to deploy the club’s resources in the best possible way. You’ve got far too much to offer to be undermined in this way. If this approach doesn’t work, burn him out of it. Noel embodies a bit of flash, and a lot of substance. Get him on your side on
