 Some of my best work as the father figure of Ballybore GAA Club has been done in the maternity ward. Ever since I initiated the January, If You Can At All, programme, the fortunes of the club have rocketed.
From April, local women in the family way submit to me their due dates. “You’re a terror, Noel,” Nancy often says to me, “you don’t rule out any child scheduled from November 15th onwards.”

 The sight of cattle grazing on the red slope leading above Studenets led Nancy to fear the trip was in jeopardy.
“Noel,” she said, in a low, sad voice, while peering out the window of the chalet, “I often saw more frost on the car after bingo in July. I’ll break the news to them we’re all going home.”

 Christmas night, I had Nancy on the ropes with a flurry of jabs to the body, and wanted to finish the job, but the phone rang.
Reluctantly, I paused the fight. It was the club chairman. "Noel," he explained, "Mary Kirby is home from Fran Sancisco, and wants to play in the Marrieds v Singles tomorrow. |

 "Ballybore 213," ventured Nancy, picking up the phone, as you do.
"Ah, is it yourself what’s in it, Nancy girl," came the voice at the other end, "great to hear your dulcy tones, and I wish you and yours the very best over the Christmas, and I look forward to many more gripping adventures involving your own good self and his own good self in 2009." |

 "Noel," said Nancy, angrily, "RTE would give a person eireach."*
