Going Short for Hurling Punch PDF Print E-mail

Dear Noel,

I was christened Thomas, but now that I’m getting serious about my hurling career, I’d looking around for something punchier. Should I go for Tommie or Tommy?

- Thomas P. McCarthy (17), North Cork

Noel replies – Good to see you’re leaving nothing to chance, Thomas P. Too many people don’t take charge of such a fundamental issue, and before you know it Paudie Palmer is calling you Thomasheeeen on County Sound, and, in all fairness, you might never recover from that.

You should really go with the name with which you feel most comfortable. You’ll be the one carrying it around.

Think which looks better in the Vale Star Observer: Tommie P McCarthy 0-5 (3f), or Tommy P McCarthy 0-5 (3f.) Think about your CV, your Bebo page, the tattoo you’ll get when you make the county panel.

What usage best suits these scenarios? Consult a graphic designer, and if you know an image consultant, no harm to talk to her either.

I wish you the best of luck with it, and with this kind of attention to detail, I firmly believe you will go far in the game.

Of course, if it were left to me, I’d go for Tommy. Tommie’s a joke of a name. And don’t get me started on Jimmie.
