Dear Noel, In light of all controversy over the Government grants, were you ever paid to speak at a dinner-dance?- Nicholas, North Kilkenny Noel replies: I have cut-glass from all over Ireland, and framed pictures of junior championship teams from Antrim to Cork, but I never got cash. And I wouldn’t accept it. I write this column for free (well, as good as, anyway.) I was once offered €100,000, a racehorse, and a house to manage a prominent Leinster county. I threatened to report them to the Amateur Status Review Committee. I heard afterwards the horse subsided and the house died. The team didn’t win much either. If they came back to me now, and offered me nothing, I’d take them on.
