Dear Noel,
I’m compiling The Definitive Book of GAA Collective Nouns (Volume 1). It’s a fascinating exercise, if I do say so myself. So far, I have come across the following: A Compromise of Chairmen; A Cork of Strikers; A Release of PROs; A Grunt of Corner-backs; A Leap of Goalkeepers; A Yerrah of Kerrymen; A Pride of Wexfordmen; A Scrooge of Treasurers; An Irrelevance of Selectors; A Bus of Coaches; A Disaffection of Subs; A Grant of Amateurs; A Knowall of Noels; A Ring of Arseboxers; A Punt of Half-backs. . Would you have any suggestions yourself, Noel, or would your readers come up with some. While I have you, what do you think about the International Rules, Noel? - Nollaig, a Norrie, Cork city.
Noel replies – It’s a topic I’ve given a lot of thought to myself over the years, and I welcome your imminent publication, Nollaig. Nancy and I mulled over your question last night on the way home from a table quiz in aid of the county board. I came up with A Whinge of Managers myself, while Nancy felt A Cliché of Pundits works well. If any readers can help Nollaig in his noble task, email

and I’ll pass them on. I don’t think about the International Rules, Nollaig.
