Dear Noel,
Do you think some hot romance the night before a big game is a good or bad idea?
Would the much-trumpeted benefits from releasing all those endorphins outweigh the fatigue generated by the work-out itself? Would I be stronger or weaker going into the last ten minutes of a tight game?
My husband has never noticed any difference in how I play the day after (or, indeed, of) one of our passionate encounters. His name’s Jerry. He’s a tiler.

Noel replies – Before I could give a definitive answer, I’d need to know your regular position, Joanne.
If you’re a corner-forward hauled out for a third midfielder role, you should abstain for a week before a match, and two after. And hope the county team get an extended run to give you a bit of breathing-space in the domestic fixture list.
For all other positions, I recommend a 48-hour hiatus before every game. Employ some mental training techniques to make yourself strong.
Think about all the jobs Jerry will get done around the house. I never met a tradesman yet who didn’t neglect his own patch.
It was great for the club to get to All-Ireland final last year – would be mighty entirely to go one step further this time. By the way, Nancy says discretion is the better part of valour. I wish you the best of luck.
