Dear Noel, I’ve just been appointed PRO of the club. I want to start creating a excitement around the town about the club. One of the ideas I had was to establish a Club Shout, like the Clare Shout. Could we get funding for this? Am I mad? - Anthony
Noel replies – This area is ripe for exploitation. Why should Clare have that advantage? My club set up a Shout Sub-Committee (SSC) about four years ago. A few of us went down to Gallagher’s Wood for an evening of experimentation. Of course, this gave rise to some debate of a philosophical nature: if a sub-committee shouts in the wood, and the wood is not vested in the GAA, and there’s no-one there to hear the shout, is it still a shout, and are they still a sub-committee? I will return to those questions again. The key thing here is to get it right before you bring it into the game situation. If you haven’t a wood nearby, you could always experiment in the bog or in a disused warehouse. Tactically, it could be quite counter-productive to try it out for the first time on the day of a match, as it could really upset your own team. I see no reason why your club wouldn’t get some funding from people like FAS, the Arts Council, or our local LEADER group. Commence political lobbying immediately. Re your other question, please forward further details to allow me reach an informed decision.
